Earlier in my life, I had convinced myself that a lot of the desire I had for women to find me attractive was just because I wanted women’s approval in a platonic way (lol). There’s something freeing about no longer trying to squeeze yourself into heteronormative dynamics and having to conform to those honestly made me feel icky for so long. I finally feel comfortable in myself because I’m surrounded by queerness and I look back on so much of my life realising that I really didn’t listen to my own desires AT ALL. I’d like to go back and tell myself to stop stifling myself, to stop trying to look/act a certain way for people I wasn’t even into, and to watch more gay films. Nobody had ever said that to me before. We’re always told to grit our teeth with period pain and that’s what I always did. That was the first appointment in which endometriosis was fully explained to me. It wasn’t just bad periods, it was one of the most painful conditions you can have. There were so many symptoms I didn’t realise were related and I had no idea so many of my organs could be affected. A couple of weeks ago, my partner had to call the ambulance. After a night of pain, I went cold, numb and was going in and out of consciousness. I thought I was dying. When I finally spoke to my doctor I asked her “Is this how bad it can get?” She said “Yes, this is what endometriosis can be like. I’m really sorry.” I keep thinking: would it be this way now if I’d have known the symptoms? Could I have gotten help sooner if my period pain was taken seriously? I know I can’t change the past now, but at least I can pass on my experience for others. If your periods affect your ability to live your life – whether that is because of pain, sickness, bladder problems – do talk to your doctor about it. There are lots of things that could be going on and menstrual health is extremely important.✨ #endometriosis
