Ben was sent from the Warsaw ghetto to the Majdanek prison camp in July 1942.

He was given the task of washing potatoes there. The sick prisoner was the first to be slain, but because of his swollen legs, he was transferred to the hospital.

Ben, however, was shielded for two weeks by SS agents stationed in the kitchen and eventually made a full recovery. Later, another prisoner who had stolen vegetables was apprehended by the same SS.
