Gary Edward Keillor was born to English and Scottish parents in Anoka, Minnesota, on August 7, 1942. He is a radio personality and broadcaster best known for hosting his radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion,” on Minnesota Public Radio.

Keillor’s family was members of the Plymouth Brethren, an Evangelical Christian denomination that he later renounced. After formerly visiting a Lutheran church in New York, he told Christianity Today in 2006 that he was now attending the St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Keillor graduated from Anoka High School in 1960 and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Minnesota in 1966. He began his broadcasting career while still in college at Radio K, a student-run radio station.
